The Whittier Heights annual dinner was held Sept. 16 in conjunction with the Whittier Elementary PTA showing of "Chicken Run." Thanks to everyone who made this event a success, and special thanks to Ballard and Greenwood Markets for food donations. We will donate $450 from our revenue to hurricane relief this year.
On-going projects: (1) Baker Park landscape maintenance. Next event set for Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 to noon, digging and dividing perrenial flowers such as lillies and anemones. Bring your pots and shovels, divisions may be taken home. (2) Efforts to block Safeway's discount style gas station at the corner of 15th NW and NW 83rd St. Focus has shifted to making permanent zoning changes now being reviewed by Seattle City Council's Land Use Committee chaired by Peter Steinbrueck. The Emergency Ordinance enacted in May which put a pedestrian overlay in effect until next April is being challenged by Safeway. The pedestrian designation for this area will be much more difficult to pursue as a permanent change now that the Monorail project appears dead in our Crown Hill area. By adjusting city zoning code, we can permanently change the conditions that must be met before a gas station can be allowed in neighborhood/commerical (NC-3) zones in the city. One proposed change would allow ONLY 4 pumps, or 8 cars fueling at one time. A better change would require any new gas stations to conform with language under drive-in restaurants. This language requires full traffic studies, guarantees that traffic impacts will not effect neighboring residential streets, and not force the city to make traffic changes costing city taxpayers money. More information is available from Richard Conlin's office.
